I’m shocked, that after 31 posts, I have yet to blog one word about reading! Especially considering that it is my very favorite thing to do in this world!
Prompted by the movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, I recently devoured several books regarding the scientific probability of God (The Fire in the Equations, Beyond the Cosmos, and God and the Philosophers). The movie itself is an excellent commentary on the lack of reasoning within the scientific community, as the majority makes a biased jump towards deflecting the scientific method and giving into social and political pressure as an answer to scientific questions; I highly recommend it along with the first two books mentioned above in parentheses, the third book isn’t quite what it professes to be. Plus, Ben Stein makes Richard Dawkins look like the pathetic self indulgent weasel that he is.
As much as I thoroughly enjoyed my scientific inquiry, in fact Beyond the Cosmos even helped me to understand and formulate some of my theories about Lost – and who wouldn’t be thrilled about that?, I am ready to become enveloped in a thrilling and gripping tale of fiction!
I need a good book to read, but my problem as a reader is two-fold:
- It typically takes me a good couple of days to get through the first 30 pages of a story. I just seem to be unable to give myself over to something until I’m convinced it’s going to be a worthwhile effort.
- If I read, finish or even start a subjectively bad book, I have the most difficult time trying to get myself to read again, fearing that the next book is going to be equally unpleasing.
So when in limbo, I bake because I know that is always going to produce an excellent result. However, please share your favorite books, and a synopsis if you would – but don’t give anything away!
Topping: Cinnamon & Sugar
This is the perfect, crispy around the edge, melt away soft in the center, butter cookie.
1 1/2 cups sugar
Mix until light and fluffy
Mix until dough doubles in size
2 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
Roll dough into oblong balls and roll in cinnamon sugar mixture
Bake at 350° for 7-9 minutes
