Come Listen to a Prophets Voice Day One

A little while back in Primary, one of the leaders was explaining to the children that we wouldn’t be meeting the following week because it was General Conference, when immediately one of the children yelled out, “That means doughnuts!”

Being a huge proponent for any cause to celebrate or festivalize family events, frankly I’m surprised I hadn’t already formed traditions for our bi-annual conference viewings, but its never too late for fun! Except… when conference rolled around this weekend we had some trouble remembering what our GC traditions are! Oops!

After some reflection we remembered something about pie, pizza, and hamburgers; I think we need some work!

Tart: Strawberry
Filling: Pastry Cream
Glaze: Strawberry

We started off this morning bright and early… 8:45! Oi! But it was worth it, pie or no pie. If you don’t know much about General Conference please click on the link above. Conference is an opportunity for members of the Church of Latter Day Saints to congregate, no matter where in the world we are and (to quote a primary song) listen to a Prophet’s voice. From the Church Headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah the First Presidency and Quorum members speak to us from inspiration. Conference is held twice a year, in spring and fall, and is broadcast throughout the world.

Thus far, through day one, my favorite talk has been by Elder Richard G. Scott. He spoke of personal experiences and tribulations he has endured throughout his earthly life and counseled each of us to endure with faith, never complaining. You can listen to audio of his talk – here (scroll down to his name, Saturday afternoon session).

His talk reminded me of my favorite scripture:

Doctrine & Covenants 24:8
“Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days.”

5 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons margarine
Mix briefly to smooth

2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1 egg
Mix just until incorporated

Roll onto a floured work surface and roll to 1/4 inch
This dough will behave like pie crust; treat it as such
Fold in half, lay in tart pan, and form to pan
Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes
Let cool in pan

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1/4 cornstarch
Bring to a boil over medium heat until mixture thickens and becomes translucent

Remove from heat and pour in one package strawberry jello
Add 1 tablespoon butter
Stir until butter is melted and jello dissolved

Pastry Cream:
1 1/2 cups milk
3/4 cup white sugar
Dissolve sugar in milk over med heat, bring to a simmering boil

In a separate bowl whisk
2 whole eggs
4 egg whites
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup milk
Slowly temper egg mixture into milk mixture
Cook until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon
Remove from heat, stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla and 5 tablespoons butter until melted
Cover and chill

Pour chilled custard into crust
Slice strawberries vertically, arrange in a circular pattern beginning at the outside edge and spiraling towards the center

Cover strawberries with glaze

The delicate pale custard envelops the tart strawberries providing a heavenly sensory and textural experience.
What are your favorite conference memories or family traditions?

  1. Holy crow that looks delicious. Strawberries were on sale yesterday and I didn’t buy any, now I REALLY wish I would have. If I don’t have a tart pan does a pie pan work? Millie’s party is May 16. I had a client tell me about Strawberry Soup. Have you ever heard of that or have a recipe for it?
